Following on from earlier demos, one-man black metal band Tenebrositas return with a new album, containing 33 minutes of raw, lo-fi black metal. I had previously written of the band that their demos had left me wanting that bit more, and that I hoped a full-length would soon follow. Well, here it is. Hopes had been raised by those previous releases, and I was excited to receive Embraced By The All Devouring Void, especially so soon after the release of Black Is The Empire Of Torture And Despair. Does the new release meet expectations? Put simply, yes, it does.
With the exception of the atmospheric intro and outro tracks, there is no major deviation from what has gone before. Tenebrositas have stuck to the template laid down by Darkthrone all those years ago, and this record is full of strong riffs, powerful, straight-forward drums, and shrieked vocals obscured by a raw, necro production. The chainsaw guitars are pushed right to the front of the mix, and it suits the music well. This style of black metal is all about the strength of the riffs and guitar movements, and Tenebrositas continue to show a strong grasp of the style. “Forlorn Path To Obscurity” features some of the best examples, and even a few moments of dynamics and contrast that other bands playing this style of black metal could learn a lot from, as does “Eternal Wrathland”. Likewise, whilst there is almost zero deviation in overall style over the course of the album, there is a greater sense of individuality about the songs compared to the demos – considering how little time has passed since the release of Black Is The Empire…, it’s especially impressive.
That the album also keeps attention held over its course is also worthy of praise. Too much black metal of this raw, lo-fi style can drift in to background music, yet that is not the case here. It never threatens to fall into stagnation or lose momentum, which is further testimony to the strength of the riffs and their structure.
Based on evidence thus far, Tenebrositas are shaping up to be one of the strongest new bands within raw, lo-fi black metal. The one-man band understands what makes this style work so well, and is displaying impressive talent in playing this style of music. There is nothing revolutionary being done here, but what is being made is being made exceptionally well.
Embraced By The All Devouring Void can be streamed and downloaded for free via Bandcamp, as can previous releases by the band.
